PRIMUS (Les Claypool on bass and vocals, guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander) hits the road in tour in support of their fall release Primus and the Chocolate Factory.

In the summer of 1971, PRIMUS guitarist Les Claypool was a couple months shy of his eighth birthday when David L. Wolper’s Willa Wonka and the Chocolate Factory debuted in movie theaters, based on the Roald Dahl book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Throughout different stages of Claypool’s life he has come back to the movie, repeatedly thoughout different stages of his life, taking something different from it each time.

So it seemed equal parts genius and obvious when Claypool decided to throw a Willy Wonka-themed PRIMUS show on New Year’s Eve last year. During the second set, PRIMUS performed the soundtrack in its entirety. “…It felt good. If felt like we needed to do this,” remarked Claypool seven months later.

It felt so good, in fact, that he decided to take PRIMUS into the studio to prepare the soundtrack for an album release. Claypool admits that he’s always, “in some way, wanted to be Willy Wonka,” and that he’s always wanted to work a cover of The Candyman, a memorable number from the film’s soundtrack into PRIMUS sets.

At first, PRIMUS was strictly an underground phenomenon, but in the years between their third and fourth albums, their cult grew rapidly. 1991s Sailing the Seas of Cheese went gold shortly before the release of Pork Soda. By the time of the album’s 1993 release, PRIMUS had enough devoted fans to make Pork Soda debut in the top ten music charts. The band went on to tour for a year including a headlining spot on Lollapalooza 1993.

In the summer of 1995, PRIMUS released their fifth album, Tales From the Punch Bowl. It was another success, going gold before the end of the year.

Now with the release of their 16th album, PRIMUS plans to tour with the Chocolate Factory beginning this fall. “Our project is a homage to Gene Wilder and David L. Wolper’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and the effect it had on me in my youth,” spouts Les. “Now we get to sell PRIMUS candy bars and hang out with demented Oompa Loompas. Plus to top it off, it gives me an excuse to wear a purple, velvet waistcoast and brown top hat for the next 18 months.”
