Mike Hammer: Encore for Murder
Thu, Jan 25 - Sat, Feb 3 @ Murray Theatre
The Ultimate Murder Mystery night out comes to the intimate Murray Theatre, celebrating the 70th Anniversary of Mike Hammer, the hardboiled detective created by acclaimed crime novelist Mickey Spillane. A World Premiere of an all-new Mystery play that features bullets, Broadway and babes! In this cool style of the 1940s radio plays, Mike Hammer Encore For Murder, stars Gary Sandy (WKRP in Cincinnati) as Mike Hammer, the toughest PI of all, who draws a seemingly routine assignment—playing bodyguard to diva Rita Vance on the eve of her big Broadway comeback. Rita is an old flame of Hammer’s and when their romance is rekindled, the detective finds the actress facing death threats and himself the target of one hit man after another. When the actress disappears, the show must go on, which with Mike Hammer means swift, violent retaliation. Hammer seeks to make a rescue before Rita’s curtain comes down.
Mickey Spillane, the best-selling private eye writer of his time, introduced his signature detective character Mike Hammer in his first novel, I, The Jury, which sold over 6 million copies in the U.S. alone. Hammer quickly became a multi-media juggernaut, appearing on radio, in films (most notably Kiss Me, Deadly), daily newspaper comic strip, two popular television series as well as thirteen best-selling novels.
Max Allan Collins is the author of the acclaimed graphic novel, Road To Perdition, basis of the Academy Award®-winning film. The Mystery Writers of America bestowed their highest honor by choosing him as the 2017 Grand Master, representing the pinnacle of achievement in mystery writing and acknowledging the important contribution he’s made to the genre. Working from the plot for an unwritten novel found in the files of the late Mickey Spillane, Collins has fashioned a compelling noir thriller, Encore for Murder, that is vintage Mike Hammer, all the way.
