THEATER

Students can immerse themselves in the world of theater, learning the basics of acting, character development, and storytelling, all while making new friends and working with a team. From memorizing lines to creating the perfect costume, aspiring actors will have the chance to experience every aspect of live theater, building up to a final performance for family and friends!

BROADWAY BOUND I

While encouraging self-expression and boosting confidence, students will learn the basics of acting and movement/dance for the stage with an end-of-term performance for family & friends.

Continuing to build on acting basics, students will focus on the art of storytelling and character development concluding with a “from page to stage” performance for family & friends at the end of the term.

Grades: 6th - 8th

Students will study short scenes from published works furthering their acting skills and the ability to analyze plays for truer performances. Family & friends will be invited to an end-of-term performance featuring selected scenes.

Raymond James Presents: Middle School Arts

Stage Acting

Grades: 9th - 12th
Tuition: $325
Schedule: Saturday, 12:30-3:00pm

Through critical examination of theatrical moments, students will learn to select the best acting choices possible for higher-level performance. A selected one-act play will be presented to family & friends at the term’s end.

MUSIC

Dedicated musicians looking for a way to strengthen their skills and build confidence have found the perfect place! Music classes at the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts are taught by professional artists committed to helping students reach their goals – whether they are just starting out or have been performing for years.

Jazz Night

Ages: 14 – 19
Tuition: $350
Schedule: Monday, 6:00-9:00pm
Classes start: Monday – January 21
Classes end: Monday – April 13

Jazz Night is designed for dedicated students interested in taking their love of this extraordinary genre to the next level. The history and development of jazz music is explored, along with theory and improvisation skill-building. Multiple performance opportunities on the Ruth Eckerd Hall campus and throughout the Tampa Bay area occur during the term.

Auditions: Aug. 18, 25 & 27. Call 727-712-2706 to schedule. 

Auditions will include: 

  • Memorized scales: Concert Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, F, C, and chromatic (two octaves) 
  • Memorized prepared piece, short jazz etude or standard 
  • Sight-reading at discretion of the instructor 
  • Improvisation (optional) on a 12-bar blues form in concert Bb, FMaj,  (Accompaniment Track can be provided on request). 
  • Drummers should be able to demonstrate swing, ballad, Latin, and funk.

Ruth Eckerd Hall Chorus

Ages: 18 and up
Tuition: $100*
Schedule: Tuesday, 6:00-8:00pm

The Ruth Eckerd Hall Chorus is a talented group of multi-generational singers who celebrate the joy of music by singing TOGETHER! Annual repertoire includes selections from the middle ages to modern day pop & rock, along with Disney classics and favorites from the stage. From weekly rehearsals, holiday celebrations, and sporting events to concerts on stages of all sizes, the Ruth Eckerd Hall Chorus performs regularly throughout the Tampa Bay area and beyond.

Mrs. Joylene McFarland

Education/Training:

  • Cornell College - Master’s Degree in Curriculum & Instruction
  • Cornell College - Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance and Music Education
  • Studied with internationally-acclaimed pianist, Julian Bern

Experience:

  • Music Director for the armed forces NATO Theater in Nurnberg, Germany
  • Instructor of K-12 band, general music, and chorus  
  • Opera and musical theater accompanist

Having been a musician since the age of four, Mrs. McFarland is excited to join the team at the Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts at Ruth Eckerd Hall as a private lesson instructor and accompanist for the Ruth Eckerd Hall Chorus. Sharing the experience of music is her passion, and she looks forward to helping others discover the enjoyment and enrichment the arts can bring to their lives.
