Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5
Optimism. Anxiety. Resilience. You know the feeling when everything shifts, and somehow you keep going. Enter Leonard Slatkin. One of America’s most respected conductors, Slatkin brings decades of insight to a program that captures the emotional pulse of the 20th century. It opens with the bright, open-air energy of Ron Nelson’s Savannah River Holiday, before turning inward with Leonard Bernstein’s The Age of Anxiety. Pianist Orli Shaham takes the spotlight in this work — part symphony, part piano concerto, all emotion. Then comes Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. Tense, powerful and ultimately defiant, it builds from quiet unease to a finale that feels hard-won.
