John Williams: The Cowboys: Overture
Kris Bowers: For a Younger Self
Richard Strauss: Symphonia Domestica
How do we become who we are? Michael Francis leads a program that mixes big dreams, old memories and everyday life. Just like a movie, John Williams’ The Cowboys Overture captures the searching spirit of the American frontier. Then things turn inward. Kris Bowers’ For a Younger Self feels like a letter to who we used to be, full of warmth and wonder. It’s performed by charismatic violinist Charles Yang, one of those rare musicians who doesn’t sit neatly in one box. He blends classical, pop, rock and improvisation with a sense of freedom that feels completely in the moment. Then Richard Strauss’ Symphonia Domestica brings it all home — truly — painting a vivid, sometimes chaotic portrait of family life. This is music that feels like real life.
